Gain Compensation
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hi David this is a request on behalf of Manuel Cohnen.

Could you add an option for auto gain compensation.

What i mean is say you've just done sound check and have set all your preamp gains, foh fader levels, iem mix buses, fx buses, compressor & gate thresholds and it comes time for show time the band starts and instantly because they're in show mode they're playing louder and some levels might be peaking.

You take the gain of a channel and reduce it to compensate for the softer playing in sound check and of course this adjustment changes the bands iem mixes, channel compressor & gate thresholds and bus fx sends.

It would be good if the desk would take a calculation from whichever way you turn the gain and it would adjust any related bus sends or dynamics thresholds accordingly.

Ie..3db of preamp gain up, turns the iem mixes levels down 3db, same in fx buses and any other sends relating to that channel or dynamics thresholds.

A lot of guys are running their own sound from stage due and might not be able to have an experienced foh operator due to budget etc...

Imagine you're a band member who all of sudden needs to reach over and push the gain up or down during a song or in between a song, going into buses and dynamics to adjust relative balancd is crucial time a band doesnt have

Hi,
I think you're confusing preamp gain with actual input gain (amplitude).
Let's say the preamp for guitar is at 25dB during soundcheck and the guitar player increases his signal with 10dB during show. Then the preamp should be set at 15dB for having the same input gain as in sound check.
So the sends and thresholds can stay the same.

If you lower down a preamp to compensate for too much gain and the sends will be increased, then the monitors will become louder.

Hope this helps, Oscar

I'm also unsure if this feature would really help in practice.
A good gain structure usually helps a lot.
Adjusting the threshold for gate and comp would be a solution where I would agree on but also adjusting the sends would cause problems for sure.

Hi David,

I understand if you think the sends wouldn't work but,

Could you consider creating a function that you think might be a better solution rather than including the sends as well?

I had an after thought that would be good for virtual sound checking,

if I was adjusting levels of the digital trim during my own virtual soundcheck could you have it so when you switch from card inputs (digital trim) back to local inputs (preamp gain) it applies the amount of + or - trimming you did in soundcheck to the local preamp inputs.

Could this also apply to the compressor and gates thresholds to keep the relative balance to what it was previously?

The ReGain feature should cover this now
